RANDOM THOUGHTS - SUMMER STUFF

I am posting videos and comments of and regarding the three best throwers I have ever worked with.

JENNIFER CALCIUMONNNE - YOU NEED TO TAKE NOTE OF WHERE THEIR RIGHT FOOT LANDS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RING. BRENDAN IS THE ONLY THROWER HERE WHO ENGAGES FARTHER THAN THE MIDDLE OF THE RING AND, HENCE, HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO IS NARROW WITH HIS FEET BEFORE HE THROWS. THIS IS YOUR BIGGEST PROBLEM. YOU NEED TO STAY SHORT ON THE FIRST TURN.

ALL CHAP THROWERS - LOOK AT HOW THEY KEEP THEIR HEAD UP AND CENTERED BY LOOKING OVER THEIR LEFT ARM AND FOLLOWING IT THROUGH THE FIRST TURN.

This is Alexa. She was a freshman my first year as coach and is now a scholarship athlete at SDSU. She ended up becoming one of the leading throwers in the nation and the number two thrower all-time in the San Diego Section, which is pretty damn good. This is her throwing in college. In high school she threw strictly non-reversal but as you can see she has fully incorporated a reversal into her technique. Alexa was always very, very, very, VERY extremely strong in three areas. A.) She gets INSANE pull with the disc through the ring. B.) Her "backwards seven" leg sweep out the back, and C. tremendous lift (posting hard with the left leg and pushing up and through with her right as she throws). This is how it should look.

This is a throw of Alexa's in high school her senior year. If you recognize that tape on the ground it's because the jumpers stole it from me after I brought it to CO!!! Those jerks! Just kidding! This video is a good example of her wide leg sweep into the "Backwards Seven" sprint through the middle. You can hear her feet pivot, that's how violent and quick you need to be. Look at the crazy pull, look at how far the disc is back when she lands after the first turn. Insane! Still she stays level and never loses the disc.

I used to have a video of Alexa throwing shot in high school about 12x in practice. I don't know where that went. This is the only shot video of Alexa I could find. It is from the Mt. Sac Invite (one of the biggest invites in the nation) her senior year of HS. I remember that day because it was hot as hell.

As you can see, she stands straight up out the back, which is a no-no, but she still gets a great base, posts hard with the left and pushes/lifts hard with the right through her throw as she punches through the shot.

This is Laticia, who was Alexa's teammate all four years. She threw 131-1 in high school and is now throwing at USF. She utilizes more of an exaggerated "up-down-up" with her discus orbit. Laticia is pretty solid out the back but kinda slows down a little with her finish.

This is Brenden. He is a senior right now at West Hills, the school I went to and then coached at for four years before moving to Colorado. He is currently sitting on top of the CA rankings with a throw of 194-1. I was lucky to work a little with Brendan his freshman and sophomore years.

Top video is his senior year, middle video is junior year, bottom is from his sophomore year.

As you can see, he is not the biggest thrower in the world, but he excels at using his athleticism. Notice how he maintains the chest up-head up-toe/knee/chin relationship throughout his first turn out the back of the ring. Notice the wide leg sweep out the bag which establishes the right momentum to start going faster through his airborne/sprint phase in the middle. He lands a little narrow, which his feet a little too close, but that is something he always has done. As you watch him spin think of the "down up down up" relationship. It's not just the disc, it's everything. Look at the lean off his left leg out the back, all his weight is over it once his leg starts sweeping, but he still keeps his chest/shoulders/head up as he pulls the disc with him.

As of right now I don't think I will be in CO for most of the summer. I will expect to see everyone in the winter time next year ready to work and get better.

Spring Break/Thunder Ridge Elite Meet

It's been a bit of a weird season so far. Usually we would have 4-5 meets so far. I know my kids back in San Diego have already competed 7 times, but due to snow/spring break schedule we've only had 2-3 meets for a lot of varsity kids. That being said we already have eclipsed our best marks in 3 out of 4 events (Girls Shot being the only mark not yet improved upon, I think Mia went 33-8 last year).

Trying to get caught up on a couple things:

Congrats to Andrew and Alex for crossing the 100' barrier. Also to Issac for breaking 40' in his first meet. Jen is close to going over 110' and Lauren is nipping away at her own 100' milestone.

Thunder Ridge is holding an Elite meet that we were invited next friday, the 5th of April. Due to the Elite Meet designation there are minimum marks in order to qualify. Those marks are:

Girls: Shot - 28' Disc - 80'

Guys: Shot - 38' Disc - 105'

A number of us are close to those marks and will have a chance on Wednesday to throw them at the sub-Varsity meet at Chap on Wednesday.

Like last year, I keep track of where your marks rank you in the state in your division (5A) and age group. If you are in the top 20 I post it on here. The following qualify:

Jen Calascione - 109-11 (1st in Sophomore 5A) 29-9 (2nd in Sophomore 5A)
Lauren Costin - 92-2 (9th in Junior 5A)
Amanda Costin - 79-11.5 (11th in Sophomore 5A)

Andrew Davies - 102' (18th in Sophomore 5A)
Alex Michael  - 100'9 (19th in Sophomore 5A)
Issac Hernandez - 43-4 (17th in Senior 5A)

2013 - Intro

As we enter our first real weekend of competition (JV meet Friday, Varsity meet on Saturday, and Jen throwing in Florida on Saturday) I can't help but feel a certain sense of....apprehension.

All I can really say, publicly, is I wish everyone the best of luck. I hope everyone throws really far. If, at the end of your meet, whichever meet that is, you feel happy with how far you threw, ask yourself the following questions:

What do you think has helped you become a better thrower up to this point of the season?
What do you look forward to improving upon specifically from this point on?

If, at the end your meet, you are NOT happy with how far you threw, ask yourself this:

Why do you think you aren't throwing as far as you should?
What do you think needs to happen in order for you to start throwing farther?
Have you done everything you possibly can in order to become a better thrower?
If not, what are some things you can do in order to make that a reality?
What are some things I can do in order to help you reach your goals?

I feel bad that I won't be at any of these meets. I haven't missed a Track weekend in 6 years of doing this. This season is just going to be one of those seasons where scheduling is a bit of an issue.

Good luck.
